This was an extremely worthwhile if complicated project that began early in 2016. The WE ARE NOT AFRAID campaign was established by Steve Weitzman in response to the global refugee crisis and to help victims of religious and political violence, and the brief was simple: cut a whole bunch of stills together featuring numerous well known actors, musicians and pundits each holding a sign saying NOT AFRAID. It was to be edited to Nigerian singer Majeck Fashek's song 'We Are Not Afraid' and all proceeds generated would benefit the Human Rights Watch and International Rescue Committee (IRC). The practical difficulties were A) to create a film that was more than just a series of still pictures laid end to end for over 8mins and B) To do it in such a way that allowed for more to be added if any failed to show up before the edit concluded - and they did. Lots of them. No surprise as each participant had to take their own photograph and some people were working, on tour, missing in action, or simply off the grid. I think we were back and forth with the edit about 4 times before we squeezed the final cut out for the release date of Nov 2 / 2016.
